"People are afraid to think big, but if you
only think small, you'll only achieve small things."

Basketball Drills

These basketball drills deal with ballhandling. Click the blue link name of the drill for more information about each of the basketball drills.

Basketball Drills: Ball Security DrilI like this drill better than the "Keep Away Drill."  I like the fact that the defense has to do three push ups if they don't get a deflection.  One variation you could run would be to not allow the offense to dribble.  I also think it is a good idea to make the receiver do three push ups if they do not meet the pass by jumping toward the ball.  In my opinion, meeting every pass is another key in your team's ball security, or as Dick Bennett calls it, "Sureness."  I really like that term. Basketball Drills: Bruce Weber Bull In A Ring Drill Here is a vidoe of ttwo drills from Bruce Weber to develop toughness while dribbling the basketball. You will probably need to scroll down the page to see the drills.

Basketball Drills: Half Court Dribbling--dribbling for one minute at a game pace and applying as many driblle moves as possible.

Basketball Drills: Half Court 2 Ball Dribbling--same as halfcourt dribbling, but using two basketballs.

Basketball Drills: Stationary Ballhandling--working on developing skills and a feel for the basketball.

Basketball Drills: Stationary 2 Ball Ballhandling--same drill as stationary ballhandling, but with two basketballs.

Basketball Drills: Coach Kevin Sutton 4:00 Ballhandling Workout--a video of a ballhandling workout that 5 Star Instructor puts some perimeter players through.

Basketball Drills: NBA Dribbling We use a drill in the individual development segment of our practices that we call NBA dribbling.  We do the traditional zig zag drill with the addition of allowing our JV defenders who are guarding our varsity perimeter players to push, hand check, and bump them to simulate what usually happens late in a game that officials sometimes do not call.  We would rather insist on toughness with the ball and practice it rather than complain about not getting a call when we need it. "Contact is not an excuse to loose the ball," is the expectation that we establish. We monitor the drill closely and don't allow it to get to the point of cheap shots, potential injuries, or causing hard feelings that could result in a fight.

Basketball Drills: Two on One Trap Drill I like to just give them the ball in one of the four corners to put them in a tough position, trap them before they dribble, and have them try to score at the basket on the opposite end.  You can make a scoring system to make it competitive.

Basketball Drills: Two on One Dribbling with Coach April McDivitt Foster Coach April McDivitt Foster working with some players and going through some teaching points for two on one dribbling.  The video is on My HoopClinics partner Josh Stinson's site.  You will need to scroll to the bottom of the page to see the video.
