Basketball--Team Defense

Developing a System | Beliefs and Philosophy | Goals | Drills | Defenses

These basketball drills deal with defense. Click the blue link name of the drill for more information about each of the basketball drills. They are from various resources

Close out One on One--a great example of teaching players to close out on the ball, contain the drive, and contest the shot.

Full Court Take the Charge (from Coach Josh Stinson at Perfect Practice). This is animated with computer software.

Shell Drill--an animation of a basic shell drill for a pack line style of defense.

Duke Men's Six Point Contest Defensive Drill is a drill to isolate one player going through the process of defending various movements and positioning in a simulation of a defensive possession.

Defensive drill working on chasing a cutter through a screen from Coach Dick Bennett. The link will take you to the page on the Championship Productions web site where Coach Bennett's DVD The "Pack-Line" Pressure Defense is outlined. Additionally, you can read reviews of the DVD. Scroll to the bottom of the page to see the video of the drill.

Tennessee Women's Conversion to Defense Drill taught by Coach Pat Summitt. The link will take you to a page on the Championship Productions web site. Scroll to the bottom of the page to see the video of the drill.

Chris Lowery of Southern Illinois teaching how they defend 2 on 1 situaitions. It is from a page on Championship Productions web site. You need to scroll to the bottom of the page to view the drill.

Here is a version of the closeout, contest, and contain drill that Frank Martin uses at Kansas State.  In my opinion, having a variety of drills that teach and reinforce fundamentals and then finding ways to make them competitive, helps keep things fresh for the players. Closeout, Contest, and Contain Drill

Coach Josh Stinson has put together a nice series on the three player shell drill at his Perfect Practice site.  You can take a look here: Three Player Shell Drill

I have explained in words what I feel is the best defensive sliding technique--wide feet.  In this video, the players demonstrate six inch step, six inch slide to maintain wide feet. I am sure that the coach in the video is an outstanding coach and obviously knows what he is doing.  I just would not feel comfortable risking an injury with this drill.  Not to mention that your AD probably wouldn't appreciate what the chairs would do to the floor if the players drop them. :) Here it is--take a look for a great example of maintaining wide feet in the defensive slide.
