Geno Auriemma--avoiding a charge in Transition There are so few times that you have an advantage break out such as a 3 on 2 or 2 on 1, it is critical to score on them. I believe that for a 3 on 2 situation, if the player in the middle of the floor is going to throw the ball to one of the players running on the wings, it is imperative that the player be drilled in making a jump stop before passing to keep from picking up a needless charging foul. Being sloppy in this case can take away a basket. There is not much the defense can do if they are outnumbered other than look to pick up an offensive foul. This video from Geno Aureimma illustrates my thought with two players, but it is the same idea if there were another player on the left wing. Whether you want the player with the ball to give it up at the arc or to get to the free throw line is a decision that depends on your beliefs and the age level you are coaching.

Press Offense
We designated a primary inbounder who was always responsible to take the ball out in the full court every time. We felt that would make him or her comfortable and s/he would have much more experience in crucial situations. We also designated a ackup and emergency player in these areas just as we would for any position.
Teach the designated inbounders to expect a press every time s/he inbounds the ball. The opponent can never surprise you with a press because you always expect it.
We want to attack the press to score. Post player on the blocks at our end opposite ball at all times and is stationed there as a finisher and to occupy one defender to make the rest of the defense play 4 on 4 which we feel is an advantage to the offense. Player dribbling the ball chooses a specific side of the basket so post knows where to be.
We always need 3-15 ft receivers in the backcourt available to the ball. When the ball gets to the hash mark, the deep man cuts through. Receivers cross the time line as the ball does. Receivers do not leave the ball in the backcourt.
Transition is four perimeter spacing spots or drive and space spots.
Out of Bounds Reads— ball side middle, weak side, top. Once ball is in bounds, inbounder drags behind the ball
Against man to man press “Clear” clear out for best handler or it could be a clear out for a player who has a poor defender and who has a decided advantage to bring the ball up
Against Zone Press
#1 Side, Side, Box—practice it to both sides
#2 Side, Middle, Box—practice it to both side
#3 Side, Reverse, Box—deep man cuts through
#4 Middle, Reverse, Box— If inbounds pass goes to the middle, a
pass to either side is defined to be a reversal. Inbounder goes to
opposite side of floor than he was on when he passed the ball to
the middle.
#5 op, Go— Once the outside receivers get to the blocks, they
should not get the ball, they turn and sprint down the sidelines
for the TOP option. Pass should be thrown to half court and
on the inside shoulder.
