Basketball Plays--Handback Inbounds Play

Posted from Creighton Burns' newsletters. If you are interested in receiving his newsletter, contact us and we will put you in touch with Coach Burns.

Basketball Plays

#5 sets the defense and moves out to receive the inbounds pass from #1.

#1 cuts outside the ball and gets a "handback" from #5.

Basketball Plays #4 steps up and sets a screen for #1 , who dribbles off the screen.

#2 steps up and back screens for #5 and #3 moves across to set a second screen for #5.

#5 uses the screens and cuts hard to the rim.

After #4 screens for #1 , he sets a second screen for #2.
#1 may have a shot , but his first look is to #5 and then out to #2.
Basketball Plays If #2 does not have a good shot attempt when he receives the ball , he will swing the ball to #3 and screen down for #5.
#3 will look to get the ball into #4.

If he cannot get the ball inside , he will look to #5 and the offense is now in the hi-low motion offense.

Here are some more resources for Basketball Plays to Inbound the basketball

All players on the court watch the official and the player inbounding the ball. The play starts when the official hands the ball to the inbounder. Taking the time to slap the ball to signal the start of the play is a waste of a part of your five seconds that you have to inbound the ball.

Under the Basket Inbound Plays

Choice--This is not animated, but is diagramed. It is an underneath zone inbounds play to run under your own basket.

Triple--Underneath out of bounds play against man to man defense.

Eye--Underneath out of bounds play against a 2-3 zone defense.

Sideline Inbound Plays

Phoenix--last second sideline out of bounds play used by the Phoenix Suns during the 2008-2009 NBA Season.

Line--sideline out of bounds play against a man to man defense.

Denver--a play to save for a last second inbounds play needing a basket to tie or take the lead. It is designed for halfcourt, so part of the play is either dribbling to halfcourt and calling timeout once you gain possession (if the clock alows that much time) or calling timeout to stop the clock, then throwing that inbounds pass to halfcourt and calling timeout. Each of those scenarios must be covered at least weekly with a live clock in basketball practice. The night before a game is good because it saves on up and down and what you practice is then fresh on game night.
