George Karl Nuggets Uptempo Playbook along with Dribble Drive Motion for High School $25.00!

eBook #1 George Karl 2012-13 Denver Nuggets Playbook

The Denver Nuggets were an attacking team under George Karl during the 2012-13 season, using the dribble-drive offense that was made popular by Vance Walberg. Coach Karl hired Walberg as a Full Time NBA Assistant Coach for that 2012-13 Season.

A former high school and college coach, Walberg is the innovator of the dribble-drive motion offense. It was revolutionary. Walberg would put four players on the perimeter and, as one player attacked the basket, the offensive post player would open space by moving to the weak side of the lane. Meanwhile, the other three perimeter players would rotate accordingly. If that particular dribble-drive play failed, the next ball handler would just dribble and drive again.

The Nuggets used dribble-drive concepts in about 50 percent of their offense, coach George Karl said. “We create our penetration off pick-and-rolls more than he (Coach Walberg) teaches, but the principles hold true both ways. It’s just trying to get the ball free to where the defense has to help. And then teaching what happens after that. Everyone has always penetrated the ball, but we teach the reads. … What I liked about it was, the thing that always frustrated me about American players is they like to play with the ball. Now I allow you to play with the ball, if you attack the defense.

It’s constant motion and it’s an integral part of the dribble-drive offense.

1) The Nuggets got to the rim more than any team in the league. The best shot in basketball is at the rim, and the 2012-13 Nuggets took 33.2 shots per game at the rim.

2) The Nuggets shot few mid-range jumpers. The most inefficient shot in half-court basketball is a contested long 2-pointer.

3) The Nuggets were the fastest paced team in the league in 2012-13. The 2012-13 Nuggets used 95.1 possessions per game (2nd in the NBA).

Playing faster means easy buckets in transition and open shots and lanes to the rim while defenses scramble to get set. Karl has drilled his players to catch and go–no killing grass with the dribble. In practice, players have to shoot, pass, or attack within 3 seconds of catching the ball or it’s a turnover. Learning to play fast like this keeps defenses on their heels. This was obviously a key tenet of the most efficient Suns teams of the “7 seconds or less” Mike D’Antoni years.

4) The Nuggets filled the perimeter with 3-point shooters.

Spacing, spacing, spacing. The effect isn’t actually that they shot more threes, but that they are able to get to the rim easier. Spacing with shooters opens up lanes into the paint.
